A lot of people are saying he died because he was fat. The coroner disagrees. Eric Garner was choked to death with banned and an illegal and deadly choke hold by NYPD thugs.
This move you see in the photo is called a rear naked choke. It not only cuts off the air supply it cuts of the blood supply and nerve supply to the brain. A normally health man or women can lose consciousness in as little as 7 to 10 seconds. That is why when a rear naked choke is applied in an MMA match the referee stops the fight immediately. Eric Garner was choked for far more than 10 seconds. Pantaleo knew that the choke he applied would kill Garner.

One study found that “correct application of the RNC can completely (close) the carotid and that the degree of compression depended more upon the direction of the force rather than its magnitude.” The same study found, “When the choke was applied correctly, and low on the neck, that the vertebral arteries were also significantly compressed.” Remember these are the arteries that provide blood to the brain, and all are affected.
Another study measured the heart rates, rate change of blood pressure, and blood flow through the carotids of 24 healthy police officers (27-40 years old, 21 male, 3 female) while they experienced the RNC, which he also refers to as “bilateral carotid compression.”
The author found that, “16 of the 24 officers lost consciousness in 7-10 seconds with only 84% compression of the carotids. Four tapped out before unconsciousness and four managed to maintain consciousness - but had significantly less carotid compression.” And Dr. Charlie noted that, “All subjects regained consciousness without any lasting deficit or injury.”
In the case of Eric Garner the duration of the choke combined with the weight of the officers who dog piled him killed him. I think killing him was their intent. I think this was first degree murder under the guise of making an arrest and even that arrest was false arrest.

Update: Statement By Congressman Gregory Meeks
STATEMENT OF U.S. REP. GREGORY W. MEEKS ON THE TRAGIC DEATH OF ERIC GARNER
Excerpt: I call on the leadership of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to complete an extensive and expedited investigation into the apparent aggression of those officers involved. While the visual image of this man’s final moments are disturbing, they are, unfortunately, not uncommon in many communities around our country.
WASHINGTON, D.C.--Congressman Gregory W. Meeks (NY-05) today released the following statement about the tragic death of Eric Garner:
“My deepest and sincerest condolences go out to the family – especially to the wife and six children - of Eric Garner in the wake of this appalling tragedy. I stand in solidarity with them and the broader community realizing that Eric could have easily been a father, brother, friend or son of any one of us.
“I call on the leadership of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to complete an extensive and expedited investigation into the apparent aggression of those officers involved. While the visual image of this man’s final moments are disturbing, they are, unfortunately, not uncommon in many communities around our country.
“The problem with this incident - and others like it - is that it is part of systemic failures that leave men of color particularly vulnerable to abuse by authorities. In this regard our nation continuously falls short of the very values it was founded upon. We cannot rest when statistics show that African-Americans are twice as likely to be arrested and almost four times as likely to experience the use of force during encounters with the police. Mistreatment at the hands of those we rely on for protection is an unacceptable reality for too many. I will continue to push for change; too many lives are at stake.” [End]
My Op Ed: Please make this more than race because it is. The murder or Eric Garner at the hands of the NYPD Gestapo unit goes beyond racism. While the racial component is clear, if one opens one's eyes one will see that the harassment, detainment and subsequent murder of Eric Garner is also a result an increasingly corrupt police culture brought on by the erosion of our constitutional rights and more specifically the Bill of Rights. Simple search You Tube for police brutality and you will see video of after video of cops brutalizing and killing people of every race and social strata.
Eric Garner and minorities are simply the canary in the coal mine. While Blacks are more likely to get fucked with my the police force cops are turning their hate filled aggression on everyone. Part of the motivation is policing for profit but the real reason for the gestapo tactics employed by the American police force is to intimidate all American
