Friend, sign the petition: Cancel the final two presidential debates. The first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden on September 29 was, to put it lightly, an unmitigated disaster. During the debate, Trump refused to condemn white supremacists and told hate group Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by,” confirmed he has already decided the election doesn’t count, defended his maskless rallies, continued his racist tirade by calling COVID-19 the “China plague,” and so much more. But Trump’s statements about his policy positions—if you can even call them that—weren’t the only jaw-dropping moments of the evening. All night, Trump slung attacks at his opponent. Trump yelled over Biden at every possible opportunity, repeatedly criticized Biden’s education and intelligence, and even went so far as to invoke Biden’s son Hunter’s struggle with addiction while the former vice president was talking about his son Beau, a decorated veteran and public servant who died of brain cancer. Donald Trump is beyond shameful. Sign now if you agree that the Commission on Presidential Debates cannot continue to enable this behavior. If Trump’s callous and cruel behavior in office wasn’t enough to demonstrate that he makes it impossible to have respectful, productive conversations, this debate certainly was. In addition to his interruptions and interjections, he couldn’t even adhere to basic debate rules. The American people deserve to hear from each candidate about how they will lead the nation through the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, the fight for racial justice and police accountability, the climate change crisis, and other emergencies facing our country. Donald Trump has made it clear that he’s only interested in a shouting match, not a debate about the future of our crumbling democracy. The Commission on Presidential Debates must cancel the final two debates and spare voters from Trump’s pissing contest. It is clear Donald Trump cannot have a respectful conversation. Our message to the Commission on Presidential Debates: September 29’s first presidential debate clearly demonstrated that Donald Trump cannot adhere to debate rules. He repeatedly shouted over both Joe Biden and moderator Chris Wallace and slung personal attacks at the former vice president. The American people deserve much better than Donald Trump’s shouting matches. Cancel the final two presidential debates. In solidarity, Sarah Hogg, Daily Kos | ||
